At a rally at the Capitol on May 31st, I jokingly asked Rep. Ron Reynolds if he’d heard any rumblings of a special session. Without missing a beat, he looked at me and said, “Yes — about redistricting, of all things.” We both laughed. I mean, surely that was too absurd to be real, right?
Wrong!
Just a few weeks later, Governor Greg Abbott officially announced his Special Session agenda, and sure enough, redistricting — the once-a-decade process of drawing political maps based on new census data — somehow made the list. Never mind that we already did this in 2021, based on the 2020 Census. Never mind that there’s no new population data. And never mind that Texans are dealing with actual emergencies like floods, wildfires, and sky-high property taxes.
Abbott's real emergency? Donald Trump wants 5–8 more congressional seats, and he expects Texas to deliver. And Abbott — ever the obedient understudy — is doing just that.
Now, redistricting is the headliner in a 17-item laundry list of legislative priorities, most of which feel like a MAGA Regime fever dream with a light sprinkling of disaster response. To be fair, there are some very real needs on this list: flood relief, water conservation, even eliminating the STAAR test (shockingly sane). But make no mistake: this session is about rigging the next election, not fixing the state. Abbott is just hiding it under other items
Here’s the full agenda, straight from the Governor’s Office:
FLOOD WARNING SYSTEMS: Legislation to improve early warning systems and other preparedness infrastructure in flood-prone areas throughout Texas.
FLOOD EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS: Legislation to strengthen emergency communications and other response infrastructure in flood-prone areas throughout Texas.
RELIEF FUNDING FOR HILL COUNTRY FLOODS: Legislation to provide relief funding for response to and recovery from the storms which began in early July 2025, including local match funding for jurisdictions eligible for FEMA public assistance.
NATURAL DISASTER PREPARATION & RECOVERY: Legislation to evaluate and streamline rules and regulations to speed preparedness for and recovery from natural disasters.
ELIMINATE STAAR TEST: Legislation to eliminate the STAAR test and replace it with effective tools to assess student progress and ensure school district accountability.
CUT PROPERTY TAXES: Legislation reducing the property tax burden on Texans and legislation imposing spending limits on entities authorized to impose property taxes.
PROTECT CHILDREN FROM THC: Legislation making it a crime to provide hemp-derived products to children under 21 years of age.
REGULATE HEMP-DERIVED PRODUCTS : Legislation to comprehensively regulate hemp-derived products, including limiting potency, restricting synthetically modified compounds, and establishing enforcement mechanisms, all without banning a lawful agricultural commodity.
PROTECT UNBORN CHILDREN: Legislation further protecting unborn children and their mothers from the harm of abortion.
BAN TAXPAYER-FUNDED LOBBYING: Legislation prohibiting taxpayer-funded lobbying, including the use of tax dollars to hire lobbyists and payment of tax dollars to associations that lobby the Legislature.
PROTECT HUMAN TRAFFICKING VICTIMS: Legislation, similar to Senate Bill No. 1278 from the 89th Legislature, Regular Session, that protects victims of human trafficking from criminal liability for non-violent acts closely tied to their own victimization.
POLICE PERSONNEL RECORDS: Legislation that protects law enforcement officers from public disclosure of unsubstantiated complaints in personnel files.
PROTECT WOMEN’S SPACES: Legislation protecting women’s privacy in sex-segregated spaces.
ATTORNEY GENERAL ELECTION POWERS: Legislation proposing a constitutional amendment allowing the Attorney General to prosecute state election crimes.
REDISTRICTING: Legislation that provides a revised congressional redistricting plan in light of constitutional concerns raised by the U.S. Department of Justice.
TITLE THEFT & DEED FRAUD: Legislation, similar to Senate Bill No. 648 from the 89th Legislature, Regular Session, that provides strengthened protections against title theft and deed fraud.
WATER PROJECT INCENTIVES: Legislation, similar to Senate Bill No. 1253 from the 89th Legislature, Regular Session, that authorizes political subdivisions to reduce impact fees for builders who include water conservation and efficiency measures.
STATE JUDICIAL DEPARTMENT: Legislation, similar to Senate Bill No. 2878 from the 89th Legislature, Regular Session, relating to the operation and administration of the Judicial Department of state government.
Now let’s break down what’s really happening and why this unprecedented, mid-decade redistricting push is dangerous for democracy, devastating for fair representation, and a sign that Trump’s shadow government is alive and well in Texas.
🚩 Why Mid-Decade Community Districting Is a Red Flag
Community Redistricting is supposed to happen once every ten years, after the Census, to reflect population changes and ensure equal representation. That’s the rule. That’s the norm. That’s what keeps democracy even remotely fair. When a state like Texas suddenly decides to redraw the maps halfway through the decade, with no new Census data and no meaningful public input, it’s not redistricting, it’s rigging. This isn’t about representation, it’s about control and stealing the 2026 election that Donald Trump can’t win outright.
Donald Trump isn’t subtle. He sees the writing on the wall that Republicans are on track to lose key seats in 2026, and rather than win voters over with ideas, he’s trying to rewrite the rules. Trump has openly called on Governor Abbott to redraw Texas’ congressional maps to squeeze out 5 to 8 more Republican seats. This isn’t strategy — it’s sabotage. It’s an attempt to pre-rig the 2026 election by gerrymandering the biggest red state in the country. He knows he can’t win a fair fight, so he’s trying to steal the game before it even starts.
If Texas sets the precedent that the party in power can call a do-over anytime it’s politically convenient, what’s stopping other states from doing the same? Today it’s Texas. Tomorrow it could be Florida, Ohio, or Georgia; redrawing maps whenever they fear voters might actually hold them accountable. This isn’t just a Texas problem. It’s a national warning sign flashing in bright red: Democracy in Danger, by fascists. Because honestly this stuff used to only happen in “other” countries, but now it’s here!
🗳️ What Texans Can Do About It
We’re witnessing something we’ve never seen before: a sitting governor trying to redraw congressional maps mid-decade, at the request of a twice-impeached, four-times-indicted former president — all to rig the outcome of the 2026 elections.
This isn’t normal.
This isn’t fair.
This is Trumpmandering — and we have to stop it.
But here’s the good news: Texans are loud, proud, and damn good at organizing. Here’s how we fight back:
✊ Use the Right Message
Words matter. So let’s get it right:
❌ Don’t say “redistricting” — it sounds technical and distant.
✅ Say “community districting” — because this is about our neighborhoods, our kids’ schools, our hospitals, our voices.
❌ Don’t overuse “gerrymandering” — not everyone knows what it means.
✅ Instead, describe it: “Certain politicians are carving up our communities to silence our voices and protect their power.”
📣 Speak Out
Flood your feeds. Talk to your neighbors. Make noise.
Here are sample posts you can copy, paste, or remix, and trust me, they hit hard:
“They’re not fixing Texas. They’re fixing elections.”
“Trump says jump, and Abbott grabs the crayons.”
“We pick our leaders, not the other way around.”

I wish calling our legislators made a difference. But honestly it's not going to move the needle one way or another. We've got to do more than speak up. We've got to do more than play by the rules. We've got to use the system against itself.
